This
month’s highlighted condition: Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)
A TBI is an injury to the brain that may cause permanent or
temporary impairment of thinking, moving, and interacting with others. It
often results from a non-penetrating blow or jolt to the head or body and is
a serious health issue. According to the CDC, there was an estimated 2.5
million reported TBIs ranging from “mild” to “severe” cases in 2010 alone.
Common symptoms following an accident include headaches, tiredness,
difficulty sleeping, sensitivity to light, difficulty focusing, moodiness, and
memory loss; all of which may cause severe disruptions in activities of daily
living.
Hyperbaric Medicine can help reduce the symptoms of TBI and
give the brain an opportunity to heal itself by reducing swelling and
hyper-oxygenating the entire body. Many patients report complete reversal of
their symptoms. If you, or someone you know has sustained a TBI, please call
us for more information!

Local Orange County Doctor Uses Hyperbaric Oxygen to Fight Brain Cancer
Local Orange County Doctor Uses Hyperbaric Oxygen to Fight Brain Cancer
Columnist Jane Glenn Hass of the Orange County Register recently interviewed renowned neurosurgeon specialist Dr. Christopher Duma. Dr. Duma is the medical director of brain and spine surgeons in the brain tumor program at Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian in Newport Beach.
“Glioblastoma, is an aggressive brain cancer,” says Dr. Christopher Duma. "Once diagnosed, Sen. Ted Kennedy of Massachusetts was dead in 13 months despite treatment at Harvard and Duke Universities," says Duma, who also serves as assistant clinical professor of neurosurgery at the University of California, Irvine. Despite this grim reality of what glioblastoma is capable of, Dr. Duma believes there is a way to successfully delay or even halt the growth of glioblastoma after diagnosis with the use of hyperbaric oxygen.
Dr. Duma explains in detail why glioblastoma is such an aggressive cancer and why administering hyperbaric oxygen will delay or halt the growth of the tumor.
“Glioblastoma cells are different from other tumors in that it doesn't grow like a snowball and get larger and larger. Instead, it gains access to the brain by infiltration. It moves like an amoeba through the white-matter pathway to the brain – so if we don't stop it, it will gain access to the entire brain and kill the patient.
All current therapies treat the epicenter, or starting place of the tumor, usually with chemotherapies that don't work well in the brain. At the best, this treatment adds two to three months of median survival.
My theory is that we have to catch the tumor as it is moving and cut it off at the pass, so to speak. We have to kind of set up a barrier to stop the tumor from migrating.
Most recently we have understood the reason the cells move -- and move quickly -- is because they are getting away from areas low in oxygen. So it also became my thought to expose patients to high oxygen settings and that will slow down the movement even more and make my boost treatment more effective.
Brains are injured from the tumor, so these areas heal better with extra oxygen and high levels of oxygen actually are synergistic with radiation treatments. Everything works more effectively.”
The Hyperbaric chamber has proven to be very effective. Dr. Duma reported, “So far the treatment has proved effective for a number of patients. Ours survive to 23 months or more – even nine years ---- while the average is 17 months. We have had one patient who has gone a year without tumor recurrence.”
According to Dr. Duma, “Brain cancer is no longer a death sentence.”

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Treatments Help Speed up Healing in Plastic Surgery Patients
Jay Hocking of Advanced Hyperbarics Rx talks about the benefits of receiving Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) Pre/Post plastic surgery. Most plastic surgery procedures are quite invasive and take many weeks for the patients to fully recuperate. If a patient is at all compromised by any pre-existing condition (ex: age, cigarette smoker, or any other predicted forethought complications) the doctor will usually suggest that the patient take part in HBOT pre and post-surgery. HBOT will assist in speeding up the healing process by up to 50% because it provides healthy oxygenated tissue.
Patients see a reduction in swelling, less bruising and less inflammation. It also reduces the risk of infection in the incision site, and scarring is less significant. A considerable reduction in pain allows the patient to return to a normal lifestyle much faster. In non-surgical procedures, patients see the redness associated with the laser resurfacing and chemical peels diminish much faster. Smokers, people with compromised immune systems, overweight patients and anyone who has pre-existing health problems that will affect their overall recovery are the best candidates for HBOT.
Patients will usually receive 1-3 HBOT treatments before the surgery takes place in order to saturate the tissue with oxygenated blood. After the surgery has taken place the patients should receive HBOT therapy as soon as possible. Most patients will come in the day of the surgery or the day following the surgery. At least 3-10 treatments should be prescribed for post-surgery healing. If any infection/minor complication is at all present after a surgery HBOT will assist in a more rapid healing process.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, Autism, Insurance
We are all aware of the lack of support for Biomedical treatments through insurance companies. Parents have fought tooth and nail for years only to receive multiple denials from their insurance companies, for most biomedical treatments regarding Autism, Cerebral Palsy, and Near drowning.
GOOD NEWS!!!!!
United Health care is covering Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for the above listed conditions which means Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy will be more available to families and patients who otherwise couldn't afford it.
With the clinical study done by Dr. Dan Rossingal and many more case studies showing benefit we can only pray other insurance companies begin to follow this practice. The International Hyperbaric Medical Association is also in the process of writing an IRB (International Review Board) that will allow treatments to be done following a standard investigation protocol, so all data can be cataloged and presented in a format to show proven results of hyperbaric oxygen therapy.
We can all remember when chiropractors were an all cash visit, now most insurance companies will cover a set amount of treatments per year as well as acupuncture. We hope in the very near future that HBOT treatments will be recognized by insurance companies as a treatment worth paying for.
In conclusion we are we are glad to see Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy begin to be covered for our kids.
